Foundations in studio art

For students in Grades 9+
Duration: 36 weeks (August 26-May 30), 1x/week for 90mins.
Day/Time: Monday 1:00-2:30
Credit: 1

Cost: $1100 (includes all materials and supplies)

Foundations in Studio Art is designed to provide a foundation for most other art courses. Emphasis is placed on understanding the Elements and Principles of Design as a basis for composition. Students will explore a variety of artists, art processes and materials such as drawing, painting, printmaking and two & three-dimensional design. Student artwork will reflect aesthetics & cultural and historical contexts. It will be important for the students to get involved in and understand the creative process, which at times can be more important than talent or skill.

Advanced Studio ARt

(For Juniors and Seniors who have taken art annually since 9th grade or by permission of the instructor)

Duration: 36 weeks (August 26-May 30), 1x/week for 90mins.
Day/Time: Tuesdays 1:00-2:30 (runs concurrently with Drawing and Painting)
Credit: 1

Cost: $1200 (includes all materials and supplies)

The students will outline the year that they would like to have along with developing their own artistic style and voice through personal creativity and content.  Students will work with various artistic mediums and techniques to create their own artwork through observation and personal expression.  We will discuss materials and lessons necessary to create individual curriculums.  If students decide to work on a similar project or in the same mediums the class will accommodate them. Projects might include drawing/painting/collage/calligraphy/design/printing, but all will be decided in September!

metalworking i & ii (Ages 10+)

Students will explore and learn about jewelry design, wire work, composition, metalwork, and mixed media pieces. Metalworking I focuses on the process and finishing of jewelry making to set the foundation for more advanced jewelry making. Projects include sawing, stamping, piercing, folding, forging, cold connections and  more! Metalworking II students will refine their composition and design work using previous skills learned, such as wire work, cold connections, bezel work and mixed media work. Individuals can advance in technique on a case-by-case basis. As always workmanship and professional presentation is stressed. Students will complete this class with beautiful, original designs.

drawing & painting

Prerequisite: Elements of Art/Studio Art
Duration: 36 weeks (August 29-June 14), 1x/week for 90mins.

Students can expect to gain a strong foundation in drawing and painting in this class. Composition, the visual element, the principles of design, and the basic techniques and concepts of both drawing and painting will be covered. The end goals are to increase artistic self confidence, increase understanding of the basics of drawing /painting and to produce successful works.  We will discuss art history, artistic problem solving techniques, effective composition, basic drawing and shading skills in pencil using contour, sketch and eraser techniques, watercolor and acrylic painting, color theory, colored pencil realism, traditional and mixed media exploration.  A sketchbook is required for visual and written ideas as well as weekly homework assignments.

Creative sculptural Design

For students in Grades 8+
Duration: 36 weeks (August 29-June 14), 1x/week for 90mins.
Day/Time: Wednesdays 2:30-4:00
Credit: 1

Cost: $1100 (includes all materials and supplies)

This art course deals with art in its 3-Dimensional form. We keep changing it up to keep the curriculum fresh and evolving by introducing new mediums and new, contemporary artists! This year we will be looking at sculptors, crafts and other 3D art forms. Materials used include wire, plaster, textiles, beads, wood, soapstone, clay and more. Projects will include altered books. assemblage, mixed media, weaving, plaster carving, masks, etc.

Receive individual attention and learn specific techniques with a curriculum created for the individual, whether you are simply looking to explore a particular art form or would like take some time to develop the art skills you already have. This is also ideal for the student who does not do well in a group setting.

Private lessons are $60/hr ages 5-12yrs $75/hr ages 13+
